Filter elements for compressors.

The Filter Guys

Filter elements for compressors.

Pneumatic tools are ineffective if not maintained correctly. Dirt and liquid particles in your compressors air line can cause lengthy and expensive breakdowns or completely destroy your equipment. Regular maintenance is essential to avoid this happening especially at this time of year when cold temperatures can cause freezing of water droplets that may collect in your air lines.

Sterling Filtration Ltd can offer a wide range of filter elements to service your compressor machine needs. We have a wide range of parts available through our extensive supply chain to service machines including, but not limited to, Ingersoll Rand, Zander, Bauer, Hydrovane, Kaeser, Husky and Compair compressors.

We supply 1, 0.1 and 0.01 micron filter elements for inline compressed air use as well as being able to offer the complete assemblies too. We also stock air, oil and fuel filters for large compressor engines as well as air/oil separators for many applications.

Remember it is cost effective to regularly service your filter elements than not service your equipment. A strict maintenance procedure can stop a problem before it starts.

Worried About Water in Your Air Intake System?

Worried About Water in Your Air Intake System?

Sometimes you can’t help operating equipment in extreme moisture environments especially during the spring when the weather is unpredictable, but it’s good to be mindful of a few things to help keep your air intake system running at top efficiency.

Typical Symptoms of Water Ingestion:

  • High Restriction indications.
  • Mud caked in the VacValve
  • Wet, wavy air filter media
  • System rust, corrosion and/or water damage
  • Moisture-related environmental problems such as icing

Simple Tips to Keep Water Out of Your System:

  • Check and clear the VacValve daily
  • Make sure the air cleaner cover and filter are installed properly
  • Inspect air intake system for any leaks

Remember, a water-soaked air filter will occasionally lock-up a restriction indicator. Wet filters should always be replaced as they are prone to tear at weak, wet spots on the media. This would then allow the air flow to bypass the filter allowing dirt and debris into your air intake.

A restriction indicators ‘lock-up” restriction level is generally marked on the indicator itself. To check an indicator, remove it, wipe the base clean, then apply a small amount of vacuum. If the indicator locks up, it should still be okay to reuse this way. If not be sure to replace the indicator.

Diesel Fuel & the Cold Weather.

The Filter Guys

Diesel Fuel & the Cold Weather.

Diesel is the most commonly used fuel in heavy duty applications and requires filtering to ensure that any contaminants have been removed before they can cause stoppages, or serious damage resulting in complete failure, to the diesel system components. In-line fuel elements can stop the larger, damaging contaminants such as rust and sediment from the fuel tank entering the fuel system.

Diesel filters are important as they have to protect the fuel pump and injectors not only from abrasive particles but also from minute droplets of water often found in diesel fuel. Injectors and diesel pumps are precision machined components and are very costly to repair or replace. It is much more cost effective to change the filters at their regular service intervals rather than have to pay the cost of even one breakdown repair bill.

You also have to remember that at this time of year water in your fuel (or in any of your machines liquids) can freeze causing damage, blockages and downtime for your engine or machine so its important to maintain water separation from diesel to prevent avoidable issues when the weather is sub zero.

Sterling Filtration offers a range of replacement fuel filter elements and spin on canisters. We can also offer various fuel housings for particulate and water removal and fuel additive for maintenance of your fuel system.

Fuel Filter Maintenance – Know Your Basics.

Best practices for fuel maintenance intervals.

  • Drain water from your primary filter daily when refuelling.
  • Carry a spare set of fuel filters in case you receive a bad load of fuel.
  • Never switch to more open filters to get longer filter life – this will reduce fuel pump and injector life.
  • If using biodiesel, make certain your fuel supplier meets current fuel standards.
  • Ensure that your engine is compatible with the concentration (or percent) biodiesel you wish to use.
  • When using your own fuel tank, remember that removing contaminants before they reach the vehicle is the best. Therefore, it is best to use some type of bulk filtration or filtering funnel (also available from Sterling Filtration Ltd).

Removing water from your hydraulic system.

The Filter Guys

If you are running a hydraulic system of any kind it is important that you avoid getting water into your lubricating fluid. Water ingression causes corrosion to your hydraulic system and can lead to breakdowns and long down times for costly repairs. It is essential you take the precautions to safeguard your system by removing water from your hydraulic system.

Prevention is better than cure! Fortunately, Donaldson Filtration have the answer to the problem:

Restore/Restore Plus Coolant Cleaners

The Filter Guys

Restore/Restore Plus Coolant Cleaners

Once a coolant system is fouled and plugged you will not succeed in removing the “dirt” by flushing with plain water. Fleetguard’s system cleaners Restore and Restore Plus address the variety of cleaning needs. They remove contamination without harming the metal surfaces, gaskets, hoses or plastic parts of a heavy-duty cooling system. Both cleaners work quickly and effectively to solve cooling system problems, saving cost-intensive downtime. Restore is an alkaline-based chelating cleaner particularly effective in cleaning silicate gel. It is also effective in removing oil contamination and solder bloom.

Restore Plus is an acid-based chelating cleaner designed to remove heavy rust and scale deposits. It is better at removal of oil and fuel fouling than alkaline cleaners.

How to use Restore and Restore Plus

  1. Drain the cooling system and dispose of used coolant. Backflush the system.
  1. Immediately add 1 litre of Restore or Restore Plus for each 10-15 litre of cooling system capacity and fill the system with plain water.
  1. Turn heater temperature switch to high to allow maximum coolant flow through heater core. Blower does not need to be turned on.
  1. Run the engine at normal operating temperature for 2 hours.
  1. Drain and flush the system with plain water and change your water filter if applied.
  1. Refill with a fully formulated Coolant (such as Fleetguard ES Compleat)
