Diesel Fuel & the Cold Weather.

The Filter Guys

Diesel Fuel & the Cold Weather.

Diesel is the most commonly used fuel in heavy duty applications and requires filtering to ensure that any contaminants have been removed before they can cause stoppages, or serious damage resulting in complete failure, to the diesel system components. In-line fuel elements can stop the larger, damaging contaminants such as rust and sediment from the fuel tank entering the fuel system.

Diesel filters are important as they have to protect the fuel pump and injectors not only from abrasive particles but also from minute droplets of water often found in diesel fuel. Injectors and diesel pumps are precision machined components and are very costly to repair or replace. It is much more cost effective to change the filters at their regular service intervals rather than have to pay the cost of even one breakdown repair bill.

You also have to remember that at this time of year water in your fuel (or in any of your machines liquids) can freeze causing damage, blockages and downtime for your engine or machine so its important to maintain water separation from diesel to prevent avoidable issues when the weather is sub zero.

Sterling Filtration offers a range of replacement fuel filter elements and spin on canisters. We can also offer various fuel housings for particulate and water removal and fuel additive for maintenance of your fuel system.

Fuel Filter Maintenance – Know Your Basics.

Best practices for fuel maintenance intervals.

  • Drain water from your primary filter daily when refuelling.
  • Carry a spare set of fuel filters in case you receive a bad load of fuel.
  • Never switch to more open filters to get longer filter life – this will reduce fuel pump and injector life.
  • If using biodiesel, make certain your fuel supplier meets current fuel standards.
  • Ensure that your engine is compatible with the concentration (or percent) biodiesel you wish to use.
  • When using your own fuel tank, remember that removing contaminants before they reach the vehicle is the best. Therefore, it is best to use some type of bulk filtration or filtering funnel (also available from Sterling Filtration Ltd).

Pre-line Fuel Filtration Housing.

The Filter Guys

Today, diesel vehicles are fitted with the latest high performance fuel injection systems. As a result, fuel filtration must meet far more demanding requirements. Pre-Line is a universal and practical pre-filter system, based on the spin-on filter concept, which provides an ideal, cost-saving retrofit solution.

Features and advantages

  • Use with diesel fuel DIN ISO 590 (5% FAME), DIN 51 628 (7% FAME)
  • Up to 600 l/h volume flow rate
  • Use of multigrade high performance media
  • 93% water separation
  • Modular system with excellent flexibility
  • Easy to service
  • Integrated, effective and easy to handle hand pump with 45 degree position to drain off water and for priming during service

Compatibility of Filter Media with Hydraulic Fluids

The Filter Guys

Compatibility of Filter Media.

Filter media can be divided into two broad categories, natural fibres (usually cellulose) and synthetic or man made fibres (usually fibre glass or woven wire mesh), although many different variations and types of media do exist, many filters fall into one of these two categories.

Fluid to be Filtered Recommended Media
Petroleum-based Cellulose, Glass fibre
Phosphate Ester Glass Fibre
Diester Glass Fibre
Water Glycol Glass Fibre
Water-Oil Emulsion Glass Fibre
Biodegradable Fluid HWCF* Glass Fibre
Course Filtration Wire Mesh

* High water content filtration

Notes on seals:

Filters with seals made of BunaN are appropriate for most applications involving petroleum oil and some high water content fluids. Filters with seals made of Viton® of Fluorel® (both fluoroelastomers) are required when using diesters, phosphate ester fluids.

T. R. A. P. Breathers. Thermally Reactive Advanced Protection.

The Filter Guys

T.R.A.P. BREATHER

(Thermally Reactive Advanced Protection)

Part No. P56 4669

The T.R.A.P. breather begins absorbing moisture at 15% relative humidity compared to 40% humidity for silica gel. This is particularly advantageous for use on short cycles of hydraulic circuits.

Increased prevention of condensation at an earlier stage helps prevent corrosion, maintain fluid quality and extends fluid life.

Its lightweight robust structure makes it is suitable for stationary and mobile applications and it’s also effective to -40F.

The reversible flow through the media allows moisture to exit the tank or reservoir.

It stops particles down to 3 micron.

A little about who we are.

The Filter Guys

Sterling Filtration Ltd was conceived of and founded by Edward and Chris Laidlar in 1996. The idea was to satisfy the need for a single source for filtration demands of an increasingly complex technical market-place. Ted brought with him decades of experience working for Case Poclain, JCB & Donaldson Filter Solutions in the UK and across Europe.

Serving the requirements of industry, commercial and public sector vehicles, heavy plant and agricultural machinery the accent from day one has always been to provide quality products at competitive prices with a high level of service. Personal attention to customers needs has been a top priority for the company. Assisting a client in identifying and then solving filtration problems has been the main ethos, as encouraged by example by Ted, from the start.  Today the benefits of staff with many years of experience help the company to guarantee that the founding ideas of the company are continued and even improved upon and in the two years since Ted retired we have strived, in a difficult market place and economic times, to hold true his high standards.

Over the years we have kept in touch with technological developments to ensure the appropriate filtration products are sourced easily and are quickly available. Speed of supply in today’s modern marketplace is another particular aspect held dear by the company. We understand the importance of keeping your machines running and so we make sure that stock levels are meticulously managed to try to avoid lengthy lead times.

Sterling Filtration Limited operates from a modern warehouse facility in the heart of the industrialised West Midlands with a fully trained and motivated staff waiting to handle the next filtration challenge.

If you require a competitive quote, help or advice regarding your filtration systems and spares please give us a call.
